About James

I am a geologist, work for a technology company, and I am a passionate photographer with a keen interest in landscapes, nature and monochrome images. Born in Sussex in 1974, growing up in Norfolk, spending 18 years working in Australia, and now living in Surrey I have seen my fair share of amazing landscapes.

I love the art of photography, I love getting out and practicing this art even more. It is my switch off from the day job; walk, observe and capture images. My passion for photography, my love of the outdoors, and my desire to share the amazing views I get to see has led to me building this website.

This website represents part of my journey as a photographer and was started in the 2020 lockdown - as good a catalyst as anything.  I am an active member of Epsom Camera Club where I have won awards for my images.

Photographer, Geoscientist, Educator, Technologist

It was a fascination with the landscape and rocks of the Scottish Highlands that led to a career in geological research and technology development.  I have always loved trying to capture what I see although it was only in the last 8 years that I finally turned to photography as a serious pursuit alongside my career.  I have enormous passion for what I do and spend much of my job educating in geoscience, technology, and data analytics.  I am successful in my photography if I can bring the imagery and emotion, I see in the field to the people that see those images I produce.  I want to show the world the way landscapes form and how we view these.  I am always seeing things and you never quite know what I will capture next, but it is the land we inhabit that always draws me in.

It could also be that I don’t like crowds ….

My journey with Digital SLR cameras started with the Nikon D5600 in 2016, a competent camera that allowed me to explore technical aspects of capturing images.  When I had taken this to point I was getting frustrated I moved to the D500, and then following a moment of recklessness (or not) about 18 months later I traded everything in for the Nikon D850, Nikon 70-200 f2.8 and the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 (landscape staples).  A truly amazing platform.

I am still learning; I will always be learning, and this is as much the fun as the final product.

I have been lucky to see some amazing places, even when I am working, I feel this is just a scoping trip.  I am British, having grown up on a farm in Norfolk, moved throughout the UK and then to Australia, first in Far North Queensland and then Western Australia. In 2019 I moved back to the UK and am now based in Surrey with my partner.  While landscapes are different all over the world I have found much beauty in the local chalk downlands as we navigated a world of covid.  I work fulltime but getting out with the camera is my meditation and I am excited to share those results with you.
